Expert on your field: Marilyn Strathern

Hello people, today I come back to talk to you about one of the anthropologist that I admire: Marilyn Strathern. She is a forgotten author in the discipline, for example, in the anthropology department of the University of Chile she is not mentioned.

She is a social antropologist who was born in 1941 in Wales, UK. In the present she has 78 years old, and works as professor of anthropology at the University of Cambrigde.

Together with Roy Wagner, they are the ones who initiate ontological anthropology. This type of anthropology is based on the symmetry between humans and non-humans (animals, objects, environment, etc.) and seeks to study the many possible forms of existence. In particular, the Marilyn’s anthropology has been called retro-antropology, that is, a form of antropology in which, throught the study of other ways of living, the way of living itself is questioned. For example, the Marilyn’s examination of Melanesian ideas simultaneously exposes aspects of our own thought: the concept of the ‘dividual’, the idea that people in Melanesia are imagined to be composed of distinct qualities and multiple entities, stands in critical relation to the Western theory of the individual.

Some of her texts are:
-Parcial connections.
-The Gender of the Gift
-No Nature, No Culture
-Property, substance and effect. Anthropological essays on persons and things
